I watched the documentary Cool School last night on netflix. 'THE COOL SCHOOL is the story of the Ferus Gallery, which nurtured Los Angeles’s first significant post-war artists between 1957 and 1966.'
I could say a whole bunch of things. But I’d rather not get into all that.
Just a couple of notes here... like John Altoon. Here’s a man who died. Another artist who died. They gave him shock therapy and he died.
And then there was Wallace Berman. George Herms described his show as ‘a regular art gallery turned into a temple’. The authorities closed the show down, calling it obscene.
There’s no question that art test’s boundaries. At least it should. But, more so, there’s no question that artist's are crucified.
we snuff embers of the burning bush as quickly as they spark ... with censorship or shock therapy ...
