there' s no time for anything else.
just poppies and road wings! -kEith kimmel

listening to the Beatles. reminiscing about lost times, regrets. and i say begone! one more second on spilled soy is one more second lost of the soul. i'm here to pronounce the beautiful. how many times i look at work i've done in the past, LABORED over in the past, WORRIED over getting just perfect ... and then seeing it in the present (maybe years later) and loving it, all the stress gone, meaningless (obsessing) in the first place. what i'm saying, young kitties is ... this sailboat, is soaring ... and frets; frets are here and forever now only for my blistering guitar!

the CARNIVAL PRIZE and THE GRATEFUL DEAD

"One of the things about the name, right from the beginning, was that it had a lot of power. It was kind of creepy. People resisted it at first. They didn't want us to be the Grateful Dead -- it was too weird. But ... I don't think the connotation is nearly as creepy as it used to be, though sometimes the power is very evident." --Jerry Garcia

I have a thing for carnivals. Perhaps this is because, every thanksgiving from about age 8 to 13 my best friend and I would go to the Broward County Youth Fair on Thanksgiving Day. We chose that day, because that day was the day you could ride all the rides (everything) for one flat rate of, I think, 8 bucks. Imagine, all those rides, anything you wanted, all day long.

My best friend was David Singer. Some of you who know me from back in the day, obviously know that David passed away from cancer when we were 16. There's no question that moment, the moment I found out he was sick, was one of the most pivotal moments in my life. It certainly is a reason I have become such a creative force.

But this story is about the fun we used to have at the carnival. Specifically, this is about the Grateful Dead Tinfoil Mirror we stole from the "guess your weight" carnival vendor.

Among other things, Singer and I used to get into all sorts of mischief. If not for my mom, seeming to always catch us, Lord knows the kind of shit we would have gotten into. Her fearful presence must have kept me from going too far down the rabbit hole, but I can't tell you how much fun it was, to tempt the law. We were kids! We were growing up.

So anyway, the point of the story is, on one of these thanksgivings David and I decided we wanted to have some of those Rock Band Tinfoil MIrror things that they hand out as prizes if you win the "guess your weight" game at the "guess your weight booth." Now, obviously, we didn't have money to be paling around with the "guess your weight" carny and those shiny mirrors were just so alluring. You got to understand, maybe you remember being a child, the smell of it, the thrill of it. Imagine, you're at the carnival, free rides all day, cotton candy smell in the air. It's thanksgiving SCHOOL's OUT. How much more fun is allowed?

There we are. David was always more brave when it came to mischief. I was the scared one. But I was always there. So imagine these two boys, looking at all these 8" x 12" mirror things with all these ROCK band logos on them. We are standing right in front of them, you know all stiff like, getting ready to swipe 'em. I think David takes one and slips it under his shirt. The fear is rapturous. So then, I'm like, I want one!

All in all we each swipe two. I think I got one that was of "The Who." And the other one, the other one was a Skull and Roses Image of the Grateful Dead. Now, The Who, I knew about. But I had never heard of this Grateful Dead. I think I'm 11 years old at the time. And yet, I distinctly remember hanging this "stolen" Grateful Dead mirror in my room, having no idea who the band even was.

Like Jerry Garcia said, the name is powerful. And it's true. It's the real allure of that Tinfoil MIrror Prize. The entire thing was pure ecstasy in it's real form. There is an innocence to it. No chasing anything, it was instinctive joy / attraction to the Grateful Dead Skull and Roses image. I'm talking raw, realness.

I went on as, I got older to go to many Grateful Dead shows, and collect thousands of recordings of this Grateful Dead. I got turned on by the music, the festivity, THE CARNIVAL of it all. But truly the best of it was that tinfoil mirror that I stole from the carnival vendor, when, I didn't even know ... who the band was.

that's the truth, ruth

"It's still hard for me to have a clear mind thinking on it. But it's the truth even if it didn't happen."
--Ken Kesey, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest

The Truth and Lies Experiment, a Keith Kimmel, the art of kEith, production (c) 2005, 2010
http://www.theartofkEith.com/truthliesblog.html every day in May 2005, Fort Collins, Co.

it was indeed EXPERIMENTAL. i STILL remember the glorious KUDOS i received direct from BABS of the sky pilot club. BABS being the right-hand man to the author of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Ken Kesey, and his merry pranksters. I still prank to this day.

But there was nothing like that time in Fort Collins in '05. We started it actually FOR THE RECORD in 2000. I followed a girl to that city, isn't it always the case. Long and the short of it is, I met Joseph Rouse through Ian Tyson and The AVO's band o' misfits, hobos, bohemians, friends ....

I was the inaugural art director and WRITER for the first OFFICIAL issue of the Rocky Mountain Bullhorn, a modest independent weekly with a heart of GOLD, published by Mr. Rouse. This was before JOsh Johnson, and Jay O'Farrell and Bethany (hot) and the rest of that 2005 crew ...

But anyhow, in 2000 I left the paper after only working on a couple of issues and then went to San Francisco where I met EV the bloke who started blogger and twitter, and I tried to sell him on Jeremy's Prophecy Dot Com, http://www.jeremysprophecy.com ; but he wasn't biting ...

money went tight so i sped across the divide back to Illinois to meet my (beloved) at the time, who was busy busy busy (as always) .. with earning her degree. we shacked up in Western Chicago and I FROZE my ass off for a year, I ate all kinds of hot dogs, and basically slept ... I slept and slept.. ... exercised a fever .. and slept some more .... finally, i think somebody gave me some speed pill ... YUP, it was adderol (there i said it) and SLAP BAM BANG i was on my way back to colorado.

i started back at the bullhorn again as an assistant graphic designer, the bullhorn was now rather established, and cruising along in the SPIRIT complex, the building just off of mason street, south of EVERYDAY JOE's, across from the LAMDA COMMUNITY CENTER and OF COURSE next to Wil's Massage Studio.

Now there was no FUCKIN way i was going to be doing graphic design my whole life, but there i was the assistant to some skateboard dude with big old holes in his ears! Jeremy's Prophecy Dot Com, the novel, was in bookstores all across the country, but wasn't selling very well ... and I have to be frank, I wanted to jump off a bridge ...!

and it was then, THEN when I was sitting in Avo's with Kate, having one of their renowned TEMPE burgers and Fries that I put down my FORK and said I have got to do something. And that was when, after that meal, that I was walking back to work, that I discovered EVERYDAY JOE's, a church, disguised as a coffee house. And there, sweeping the floor, like a humble maid was ... Suzzane, the woman who gave me the entire month of May to experiment with .... wherein i painted and wrote and made music and had shows, and performers, and magicians, and mad hatters, and ....

the results are hard to describe, but the reality is in the ETHER! this blog, this blog here, offers some of the the nitty gritty.

yes, it's true!

Keith Kimmel, know as the art of kEith, will indeed finish his much anticipated 2nd novel, "Why Pigeon's Don't Fly Too Much".
After writing Jeremy's Prophecy Dot Com, the world's first interactive novel (c) 2001, Kimmel went surfing, in the outback (as if that could be done). well not really. he started a bunch of work and he never finished ...

"It's all that dem der painting ..!" says Kimmel.

FLY! (not a fly)

the pigeons of ecstasy FLY on my trodden trail --
vision on sight.

but is that what a blog is for?

to write about these things? ...

or, rather should i attempt the journal approach

like:

i could talk about the koi pond i saw at the house where i worked today.

or how downtown's park is the most beautiful and yet the most bested location around.

or i could mention that the new series is coming along,

and that i taste all these flavors in my mouth as i think ...

or i could remain mum, as the world seems to spin away.

but what use is there to perch silent?
